Coser y cantar / Sew and sing

Sí, lo hice. Os presento a la nueva habitante de mi taller: una Singer Facilita 288 de metal con la que pienso aprender a coser. Antes debería despejar un poco la mesa, ¿no? De hecho ya estoy aprendiendo a coser, que es algo que tenía pendiente desde hace mucho tiempo. Y claro, todo ello es consecuencia inevitable de tanto bajarme estampados de tela para el decoupage, de tanto cotillear en Etsy y en blogs de crafts. Llegó un momento en que no necesitaba sólo imprimir el estampado de las telas. ¡También quiero las telas! ¡Son tan bonitas! Y se pueden hacer tantísimas cosas...
Por ahora me limito a coser en línea recta y despacito, y aún así me salen unas costuras que ni el circuito de Le Mans. ¡Y parecía fácil! Pues no lo es, y menos en plan autodidacta.
Cuando la compré, en un lugar con un nombre tan original como "La casa de la máquina de coser", me dieron una pequeña clase de uso. El chico que me enseñó debió pensar que soy imbécil. ¿Quién se compra una máquina de coser ANTES de saber coser?
Así que en esas estamos, dándole al pedal y decidiendo con qué telas me hago en mi primer pedido mientras acumulo tutoriales de proyectos con "fat quarters", que son pedazos de tela de más o menos un cuarto de yarda. El único problema es que casi todo lo que encuentro está en inglés, y yo que me preciaba de dominar ese idioma he recibido un bañito de humildad al intentar leer instrucciones de costura en la lengua de Shakespeare. No me entero de nada.
Pero bueno, mi mantra es el mismo que cuando aprendí a conducir: si hay miles de personas que saben hacerlo, yo también puedo. Y además, esta vez juego con ventaja, porque en el caso de la conducción no me compré un coche hasta 10 años después de sacarme el carnet.

Yes. I did it. I'd like to introduce you my new sewing machine, a metal Singer "Facilita" 288 I'm going to learn to sew with (not before I tidy up my table, I know, I know...). Actually, I'm already learning how to sew, which I've been wanting to do for a long time. All this sewing thing is consequence of my obsession for downloading fabric pictures for my decoupage crafts. I've seen so many beautiful patterns, so many Etsy cuteness and so many gorgeous sewing-involved crafts that finally I did no longer want to print the patterns. I needed some of those fabrics! They're so beautiful and there are so many things you can do with them!
So here I am, sewing straight and slowly. My stitches resemble the Le Mans circuit. It seemed so easy! But it's not.
When I bought my machine, in a place with such an original name as "The house of the sewing machines" I was given a short "how to" lesson. I'm sure the guy that showed me how it worked was thinking that I was stupid or something. Who buys a sewing machine before actually knowing how to sew?
My next task is to decide which fabrics I'm going to order while I stash patterns and fat quarter tutorials. There's another problem though: I thought I spoke a reasonably good english until I tried to read a sewing tutorial. It could well have been written in chinese. I don't understand a word!
So this days I'm repeating the same mantra I had back when I was learning to drive. If there are thousands people that can do it, so can I.

Practicando con sillas / Practising with chairs

¡Buenos días! Mientras la mecedora guarda cuarentena en el patio porque estaba más infestada de carcoma de lo que pensaba, he ido practicando con estas dos sillas viejas que encontré en la misma tienda de muebles viejos. Quiero conseguir otras dos, también diferentes, y hacerles lo mismo, para ir formando un comedor todo con sillas blancas antiguas y diferentes pero tapizadas con la misma tela.
La idea la tomé del blog Absolutely Beautiful Things, tan lleno de maravillas que una no sabe dónde mirar.
A estas dos sillas sólo les falta el tapizado, pero hay unas telas taaaaaaaan bonitas por ahí que no me decido. Ya que me he pegado semejante curro, quiero que queden perfectas.
Y también falta darles barniz o cera, aún tengo que decidirme.
Qué rabia que no les hice una foto del "antes", en madera oscura, porque el cambio ha sido espectacular.
Esto es lo que hice: lijarlas a mano por completo, dar una capa de sellador para madera, volver a lijar y tres capas de pintura acrílica blanca, lijando entre capa y capa. Tengo el dedo pulgar como una berenjena de tanto lijar a la vieja usanza.

Good morning! While the rocking chair waits in my patio while I finish the treatment against wood-worm -it's worse than it first seemed- I've been practising with this two chairs found in an antique furniture shop. I want to find another two different ones and follow the same steps, so I gather a dinning room made from different vintage chairs all in white and upholstered with the same fabric.
I "stole" the idea from Absolutely Beautiful Things, a blog so full of wonderful things and inspiring eye candy that you almost don't know where to start looking!
This chairs are ready for upholstery but there are so many cute fabrics out there that I can't get myself to decide. I want something really special after all the hard work I've done. I also have yet to decide If I'm using varnish or plain wax on them.
Sadly I haven't got "before" pictures of the chairs so you can see how amazing the change has been. They were so dark...
So this are the steps I followed: sanded them, applied one coat of wood sealer, sanded again and applied 3 coats of white acrylic paint sanding between each (dry) coat. My thumbs have become eggplants after all that sanding by hand!

Mecedora - Rocking chair

Este es uno de mis próximos proyectos y estoy emocionada. Me parece una mecedora súper original y la quiero poner en el salón cuando volvamos a España. La conseguí por dos duros en una tienda de muebles viejos y la pobre está bastante deteriorada, tiene algunos listones carcomidos como un queso emmental y obviamente necesita un asiento.

La idea es volver a tratar la carcoma por si las moscas, restaurarla un poco, pintarla de blanco y mandarla a tapizar con alguna tela preciosísima, quizá alguna de Amy Butler. Dicho esto, tengo que añadir que no tengo la más mínima idea de restauración de muebles, así que lo haré con muy buena voluntad y siguiendo tutoriales que encuentre en internet. Apreciaré muchísimo cualquier consejo o idea inspiradora para darle una nueva vida a esta señorita.

This is one of my next projects and I'm really excited about it. I love this super original rocking chair and I want it in our living room when we go back to Spain. I found it very cheap at an old furniture shop and the poor thing is in very bad state, with some of its parts woodwormed like an emmental cheese. It obviously needs a sitting place too.
My plan is to treat it against woodworm again (just in case), restore it a bit and paint it in white. Then I'll send it for upholstering in some beautiful fabric, maybe Amy Butler?
This said, you have to know that I have absolutely no idea about restoring furniture, so I'll face this project with my best spirits and following tutorials from the internet. Any advice and inspiring ideas will be greatly appreciated. Let's give this lady a new life!

Flores

Mientras en el hemisferio norte entra poco a poco la primavera, aquí abajo empieza el otoño, llueve y aminora el calor. Me gusta esta temperatura, algo más fresquita, que te permite usar aún la ropa de verano pero sin el calor sofocante. Y para darle la bienvenida, unas flores. Me encanta este ramo, aunque la cámara no le hace justicia, ¡los colores son mucho más brillantes e intensos al natural!



While in the northern hemisphere they're about to welcome spring, down here autumn begins. It's been raining frequently the last two weeks and the temperatures aren't soooo hot anymore. I like this weather, when you can still wear summer clothes but without the suffocating heat and stickyness. So I thought I'd welcome this new season with flowers. I love this bunch. The camera doesn't make it justice, the colours are so much brighter and intense au naturel!

Creando

¡Buenos días! Me ha costado un poquito actualizar el blog estos días, pero intentaré hacerlo más a menudo. Eso sí, el frenesí creativo no ha aminorado, aunque estuve varios días fatal por culpa de una muela del juicio que ¡por fin! me sacaron ayer.
Veamos los progresos de estas últimas semanas, en las que terminé esto:

Morning! I have to apologize (again) for not updating in so many days, but I promise I'll try to post more frequently. However the creative frenzynness remains here, in spite of a few awful days in great pain because of a tooth ache I kissed goodbye yesterday.
Anyway, here's what kept me busy the last weeks:


Es la típica cajonera de Ikea que compras en madera monda y lironda y que decidí tunear tras ver cosas parecidas en flickr y blogs varios. La tenía desde hace varios años, pero quedaba sosa sosísima. Así que lijé, le dí una capa de sellador para madera, volví a lijar, varias capas de pintura acrílica blanca y barniz. Los frontales de los cajones están forrados en decoupage a partir de impresiones de telas Liberty bajadas de la red. Recorté, pegué con cola de carpintero y di varias capas de barniz acrílico que posteriormente lijé. Estoy contenta con el resultado.

Sí, obviamente me ha dado por el reciclaje "ikeístico". Es una lamparita que tenía guardada desde hace mil años, con la pobre pantalla acumulando polvo. Una vez desempolvada, he pintado la base con acrílico blanco (estoy amortizando el tubo de pintura que da gusto). Para la pantalla he ido pegando cinta y cordoncillo de raso y grosgrain en colores que simplemente me gustaban. El remate arriba y abajo es una puntilla de encaje vintage gris que me encanta, tan delicada.

Yeah, I've got a thing with Ikea stuff lately. It's a small lamp I've been keeping for a long time, the poor shade covered in dust. Oncle clean I painted the base in white acrylic. To revamp the shade I cut and glued strands of satin and gros grain ribbon in mixed colours I liked. For the borders I used some vintage grey lace I'm in love with. So delicate!

Hola! A partir de la idea de imprimir las muestras de telas Liberty, me he puesto a investigar otras páginas de venta de telas y esto se ha convertido en un frenesí de cliquear en "guardar imagen". Creo que en dos días he recopilado más de mil , todas maravillosas! Me bulle la cabeza de pensar en todas las cositas que voy a poder hacer con estos estampados. He encontrado imágenes vintage infantiles preciosas, montones de toile, lunares, rayas, cuadritos de vichy, estampados japoneses, paisley, batik indonesio... Ahora, como siempre, sólo tengo que sacar tiempo de donde no lo hay para ponerme manos a la obra.

Hi! After finding about the posibility of printing the Liberty fabric images for my crafts, I've been doing some research and have found the most gorgeous sites from fabric sellers. The last two days have been a clicking and "save image" frenziness, so now I've got almost one thousand different pics to work with, all of them gorgeous. Actually my head is spinning around just thinking of all the great possibilities ahead of me. I came up with lots of vintage children's prints, tons os toile, polka dots, strips, gingham, the cutest japanese designs, indonesian batik... Name it! And now, as always, I just have to find the (non-existing) time to start crafting.

Ocupada y agotada

Hola ahí afuera! Siento no haber actualizado en más de una semana, pero hasta el próximo lunes mi bebé y yo estamos "uno para todos y todos para uno" y no doy abasto. Lo cual no quiere decir que haya dejado de lado el taller. Poquito a poquito voy haciendo cosas: una percha "visible" para mi dormitorio inspirada en estas preciosidades que crea Petunia, los cajones de un mueblecito de Ikea, algunos broches con intención vintage y algunos imanes-cupcake para la nevera. Estoy un poco obsesionada con la cuestión Liberty gracias al inagotable material que ofrece este lugar que nos recomendaban en El Jardín de los Sueños. También tengo grandes planes para una mini silla vieja que una amiga le compró a mi hijo en una almoneda de Tristán Narvaja. Este estampado está implicado.
Me encantaría postear más de una foto por entrada, cosa que haré en cuanto descubra cómo. ¿Alguien me ayuda?
Espero que tuviérais un feliz Día de San Valentín. Mi chico me regaló una caja de bombones preciosa y este libro. Hace años leí los dos anteriores de la saga, y qué decir de esa película... "Francamente querida, eso no me importa". ¿Os acordáis? ¿Cuál es vuestra parte favorita?

Hi out there! Sorry for the lack of updates but until next monday my baby and I are on ourselves almost the whole day, so I've became a domestic goddess with no spare time at all. Which doesn't mean I've forgotten my crafts: a nice hanger for my bedroom inspired by this cutties created by Petunia. A plain wood drawer from Ikea that is becoming my flowery flower drawer, some vintage-wanna-be pins and cupcake magnets for the fridge. I've been quite obsessed lately with the classic Liberty designs thanks to the loads of material you can find here. It's a place I found recommended in El Jardín de los Sueños (The dream's garden).
Also hace great plans for a little chair that a friend gave to my son. We found it at an antique shop in Montevideo's flea market Tristán Narvaja. My plans include this gorgeous paper.
I'd love to be able to include more than one picture per post. Is that possible? Can someone help me, please?
Finally I hope you all had a lovely Valentine's Day. My significant other gave me a beautiful vintage chocolates box and a book. I read the previous ones many years ago. And what can we say about the film? Remember this part? "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn...". Do you have a favorite sequence?
